Poor downstream passage at a dam creates an ecological trap for migratory fish

چکیده
Ecological traps can be caused when partial restoration leads organisms to make maladaptive habitat choices. One example of this is fishways (e.g., fish ladders) that provide upstream passage at dams but are not paired with adequate downstream passage. We tested the hypothesis attracting anadromous fishes spawn above a dam, blocking their offspring an ecological trap. Using passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, we monitored movements steelhead ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) dam and fishway on central California coast. found for juveniles kelts was limited by four factors: migration delay, loss in reservoir, avoidance bypass, water depths spillway. Based spillway-passage depth thresholds, estimated ability pass only half season 55% past 20 years (2002–2021). Our results support trap hypothesis, which may explain why using has failed produce recovery gains population elsewhere.

By the end of the 20th century, about 45 000 large dams (>15 m in height) and an estimated 800 000 small dams had been built worldwide (WCD 2000), obstructing over 65% of fresh w...

Background. The US Army Engineer (USACE) District, Pittsburgh (LRP) is preparing the "Upper Ohio Navigation Study, Pennsylvania" Feasibility Study and Integrated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This study will examine alternatives for replacing aging navigation locks on the three uppermost navigation facilities on the Ohio River: Emsworth, Dashields, and Montgomery (EDM) Locks and Dams. متن کاملBlockage of migration routes by dam construction: can migratory fish find alternative routes?
The present study explored the interaction between the upriver migration of fish and the blockage of their migration routes by dam construction. Specifically, we studied (i) the capacity of migratory fish to locate alternative routes in the presence of an obstacle, and (ii) the behavior of the fish after they were artificially transferred to the reservoir. With the use of the markrecapture tech...
